Learning about China - Resources at The British Museum for Schools and Teachers

Who should use this resource?  Teachers wishing to branch out beyond teaching the language. Teachers inspired by the thought of using objects to engage children and young people about China's amazingly enriching and influential heritage. Why not talk to your Head of History about how you make real learning about China's past and how that past affects the future. Make China part of your whole school.

 What is this resource?

Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival - Scheme of Work (No.2 in a series of 4 SoW)

This SoW, the 2nd in a series of 4 about Chinese Festivals, centres around a book that promotes language learning through inter-cultural understanding. Importantly it is through the eyes of a modern Chinese child seeking the ‘proper’ explanation of why the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated. Various explanations are provided by different members of the family.

The SoW provides guidance on reading the book interactively within the Book Guide and provides 6 related activities drawn from the book.

Teachers are encouraged to use an inquiry based pedagogy. Children should be encouraged to inquire about the books themselves; children drive their own learning. What can they see in the pictures? What language would they like to know in Chinese regarding the story?
